Young Adult Summer Reading Program Begins Soon

Posted by City of Yukon on 05/24/2017

Teens are encouraged to participate in “Build a Better World,” the Mabel C. Fry Public Library’s young adult summer library program, from June 8 to July 27.  Students entering grades 6 through 12 in Fall of 2017 are invited to read for prizes, as well as come to the library to take part in special events offered on Thursday afternoons throughout the summer.

Sign-ups for the reading portion of the program begin at 10:00 am on June 1. Registrants receive a “Build a Better World” drawstring backpack filled with a reading log, a bookmark, and a free entry to the first prize drawing on June 8. Participants can earn entries into the weekly prize drawings for every hour spent reading. Prize winners are drawn each Thursday through June and July. The more hours participants read, the more prize drawing entries are earned.

Start the summer with flair at the Kick-off Event on Thursday, June 8, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. Participants collaborate artistically on a project that will beautify the library all year! There are also opportunities to earn extra prize entries, as well as a ton of giveaways!

Sign-up for the kick-off event is required and can be completed online starting at 10:00 am, Monday, June 1. Registration can be done by visiting www.mabelcfrypubliclibrary.com, by calling 354-8232, by or coming to the library at 1200 Lakeshore Drive.

The events for the young adult summer reading program are always popular and well attended.  Advance registration for all other Thursday programs will begin June 8 at 10:00 am and continue all summer long. Space is limited for all events, so be sure to sign up for the Thursday programs early!

Explore your wild side at the library on June 15 at 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm. Meet some amazing animals first hand, brought to you by Extreme Animals.

Take the LEGO Challenge and experiment with robotics using fun tech toys called Cubelets, as well as classic LEGO bricks, on June 22 at 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm.

Solve a cold case uncovered by a library construction project in the murder mystery The Cracks in the Wall on June 29 at 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm.

Jump into a fantastic world on Movie Day, July 6 at 1:00pm. Popcorn and drinks are served.

World-class artist Mae Dean Erb will present Awesome Origami on July 13 at 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm.  Participants learn about Japanese culture and fold replica Samurai helmets.

Rube Goldberg was famous for developing complicated machines to do simple tasks. Science Museum Oklahoma tests your engineering skills with Can You Take on Rube Goldberg?  Design and build a delightfully complex machine with a (nearly) endless supply of materials on July 20 at 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm.

End the summer by constructing tasty replicas of famous monuments with Edible Architecture on July 27, at 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm.
