Why Yukon Residents Should Check Roofing Companies for a Solicitor Permit

Now that severe weather season is upon us, Yukon residents may begin to notice an increase in solicitations from roofing companies.  Yukon’s Police Department and Development Services Department are working to make sure residents receive quality service by requiring that non-local businesses have solicitor permits.

Roofing companies within Yukon City limits are required to register with Yukon Development Services before they begin to conduct business.  During this process, they are required to have certificates of insurance for $500,000 of general liability per occurrence, as well as workers compensation.  Development Services also sets other provisions to make sure reputable contractors work on the homes of Yukon residents and follow Yukon’s building code.

Because roofing companies outside of Yukon City limits have not gone through this process, they must obtain a solicitor permit.  Otherwise, the company is breaking the law and could face a $251 fine or even jail time.

Solicitor permits are required to go door to door of residences or businesses.  This includes leaving flyers, handbills, and other marketing material.  Local Businesses within the Yukon Police jurisdiction are not required to have a permit.

The Solicitor Permit application may be picked up at the Yukon Police Department Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.  Applicants must provide a state issued Driver’s License or another acceptable form of identification, as well as pay a fee per person of $50 per day, $300 per week, or $1,000 per year.  If taking advance payment from citizens, a $500 surety bond will be required.

In addition to the form and payment, applicants will have their fingerprints and photo taken and retained at the police department.  Applicants will also be required to submit to a full 3 part background check by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI).  A three day waiting period will be mandatory for any applicant unable to provide an OSBI background check or required identification.

More information regarding solicitor permits can be found under City of Yukon Municipal Ordinance # 82-1 through 82-28.

Roofing Companies both within and outside of Yukon City limits must abide by Yukon’s roofing guidelines.  Along with many other requirements, these guidelines state the contractors must have the required roof permit, comply with the International Residential Code, and have a decking and final roof inspection.
