Summer Early Literacy Program at Mabel C. Fry Public Library
Mabel C. Fry Public Library, 1200 Lakeshore Dr., is building up to its dynamic early literacy summer program, Libraries Rock. This summer, starting June 1, the library offers an early literacy summer reading program that gives parents and children, birth to kindergarten, the opportunity to work together to develop and enhance children’s pre-literacy skills.
Parents that sign up for this program are given a log with a list of rewarding activities to complete with their children during the summer of 2018. Starting July 9 through July 31, parents may return their completed log for a prize. To register for the early literacy summer reading program, please stop by the library on or after June 1.
Miss Stephanie and Miss Trisha are excited to be offering both Baby Story Fun and Preschool Storytime sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays. Early literacy skills are always incorporated into all storytime sessions. These skills help prepare children for reading and help get them ready for Kindergarten.
“Summer programs for children, birth through Pre-K, are about introducing and reinforcing the early literacy skills all children need to succeed in school,” said Stephanie Askeland, Children’s Programmer. “Also, through everything from silly scarf play and puppets to storytelling and songs, storytimes allow for caregivers to bond with their children in a rich and positive setting.”
Baby Story Fun and Preschool Storytime begins Monday, June 4 (Wednesday session: June 6) and ends on Monday, July 30 (Wednesday session: July 25).
Beginning June 4, the library offers two sessions of Baby Story Fun on both Mondays and Wednesdays. The first session runs from 10:00 am to 10:20 am and is for children from birth through approximately 15 months. This is a sweet time to bond with babies through stories, bounces, songs, and movement. The second session is for toddlers 15 months old to not yet 3 years (10:40 am to 11:00 am). These storytimes are high-energy and interactive, perfect for your spirited child! Traditional songs and rhymes, excellent stories, scarf play and more are provided in a nurturing environment. Children attending Baby Story Fun must be accompanied by a caregiver. Older siblings are welcome to attend Baby Story Fun, but we ask they bring a favorite doll or stuffed animal so they can participate in all the activities along with their caregiver and younger sibling.
Pre-school Storytime is for children 3 years-old to those who have not yet gone to Kindergarten, and is held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 11:30 am to 12:15 pm, starting June 4. The class shares songs, quality stories, crafts (which will aid in the skills needed for school) and more in a friendly, welcoming environment! Children must attend Preschool Storytime without a caregiver; this fosters independence and helps prepare them for school.
Participants do not have to be signed up for the Summer Reading Program to attend storytimes. However, a one-time registration is required for all storytime programs so attendees can be notified if a session is cancelled. Please register for one session per child online at www.mabelcfrypubliclibrary.com. Click on Programs for easy registration. Families who do not have internet access can register by calling or visiting the library at 1200 Lakeshore Drive. For more information or help with registration, please call the library at 354-8232.
