Memorial Plaques Available to Claim After City of Yukon Redesigns Freedom Trail Playground

Twenty-six years ago, spearheaded by a few and supported by hundreds, Yukon opened its first inclusive playground at Freedom Trail Park. A part of this playground was a round sitting wall with over fifty memorial plaques engraved with volunteer and donor names.

Fast forward to 2019, a grant was awarded to the City of Yukon to build a new, even more inclusive playground and add a splash pad.  A long process, the designs are almost fully complete, and the bidding for the project will go out at the end of the summer. Construction is set to begin this Fall, in hopes to have the playground and splash pad open Spring of 2023.

City crews worked tirelessly to demolish the existing playground, in hopes to put more funds towards the new playground, splash pad and amenities. The plaques with names were saved. The original hope was to incorporate the plaques in the new design, but there was no way to do so and include the amenities that would make the park so special for kids. While the new playground design does not incorporate the old memorial plaques, City officials understand that they still hold meaning to so many who spent hundreds of hours designing, raising funds, and constructing the original playground.

The City of Yukon would like to give those whose names are on the plaques an opportunity to keep them.  Some have one name, some two or more names and several with over thirty names engraved on them.

These plaques will be available Friday, July 29, from 6pm to 8pm and Saturday, July 30, from 8am to 12pm. Staff will have trailers set up at Freedom Trail Park with the plaques on them. If you would like to claim the plaque(s) with your family, business, or personal name on it, you may pick it up at this time.

They are very heavy, weighing around 100 pounds each, so please bring help. While distribution is monitored by staff, no one is available on site to help load them. The plaques must be picked up during this time. The plaques that contain more than one name will be given out on a first come, first serve basis. This will be the only time that plaques are available to claim and pick up.
