Irv Wagner’s Jazz Combo Headlines this Week’s FREE “Concert in the Park”
The Concert in the Park series is in full swing and on July 18, music mellows out with some dynamic jazz sounds and wonderful entertainment from the award-winning musician Irv Wagner and his jazz combo.
“Irv, who is a professor of trombone at OU, has traveled all over the world entertaining and is at his best when he plays the trombone with his toes and the spoons at the same time, which shows how down to earth someone of his prominence really is,” say Jan Scott, Parks and Recreation Director.
The International Trombone Association has two distinguished awards which it gives. The Neill Humfeld Award is for Distinguished Teaching as well as contributions to the Association. The Award was given to Irv due to his teaching record as well as my contributions to educating trombonists around the world.
As for his own students, Wagner trains them in every line of trombone work from playing in Symphony Orchestras, to jazz, to teaching at every level, and writing music. He feels the most significant group are those who are teaching in major Schools of Music around the Country such as North Texas State University, The University of North Caroline in Greensboro, Western Illinois University, University of Kansas, and on and on.
He organized and taught master classes around the world, and this was a part of the award.
Concessions will be available, so enjoy a delicious dinner at the park! Proceeds from the concessions offset the artists’ fees for the concerts that are free to the community.
The following concert on July 25 will feature classics and showtunes from The Oklahoma Symphonic Band. For more information, call 350-8937.
