Freedom Trail Playground Closes Starting May 23 for Renovations
Beginning Monday, May 23, Freedom Trail Playground will close for crews to demolish the current playground and prepare for the new playground and splash pad to replace it.
Originally scheduled for demolition in July, the play area will be demolished soon after the May 23 closure. The decision was made to move up the demolition due to the rapidly deteriorating condition of the current structures and equipment. City officials felt it was the best stewardship of taxpayers’ money to go ahead and demolish the playground, instead of spending money on repairs to be demolished in less than two months.
The new, totally inclusive play area is scheduled to open in its place Spring of 2023. A splash pad is also included in the design. A committee made up of Yukon citizens and City staff are working with the landscape architect group to design the park. Construction is scheduled to begin in September.
This $1.2 million dollar playground is being partially funded by a Land and Water Conservation Fund grant, administered through the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department.
During the construction, the City encourages visits to its many other playgrounds:
- Kimbell Park – 525 S. 7th St.
- Ranchwood Park – 200 Linda Lane
- Sunrise Park & Splash Pad – 550 S. Yukon Parkway
