Building a Better World
This summer the Mabel C. Fry Public Library has taken the Summer Reading theme to heart by “Building a Better World” one person at a time. Just ask the 6,000 people who have walked through their doors just in the first two weeks of June!
How are all these people building a better world by coming to the library you ask?
There have been over 500 1st through 5th grade students that have signed up for the reading portion of the children’s program. The library staff has already handed out close to 700 prize drawing entries to those participants who have returned their reading logs.
“I have been really impressed by how many students have participated in not only the programs, but in the reading porting of the summer reading program,” said children’s programmer Stephanie Askeland. “Each day we have parents bringing their elementary aged children to the library to get library cards and sign their children up for reading bags and reading logs.”
Children and their caregivers are not the only ones flocking to the library. There have been over 170 young adults sign up for the teen program.
“This has been a banner year,” said Lindsay Ogle, young adult programmer. “I expect that when the reading hours are totaled up at the end of July, the teens will have read close to 4,000 hours, if not more.”
“From June 1 through 15, we checked out more than 9,000 library items, 5,000 of them children’s materials,” said Sara Schieman, Librarian. “Our virtual library averages 2,000 checkouts each month, but people are still coming to the library, checking out physical materials. Each summer the Mabel C. Fry Public Library is busier than the previous year, and I find it encouraging that our community is serious about ‘Building a Better World’ by increasing their reading skills, knowledge and interests every time they visit us.”
