Always Something To Do

Posted by City of Yukon on 01/11/2010

Yukon is a community on the move with outstanding activities offered throughout the year.  Yukon is the official Czech capitol of Oklahoma, hosting the annual Oklahoma Czech Festival the first Saturday of each October. Authentic attire, kolaches and other food, a downtown parade, a beauty pageant and dance at the infamous Czech Hall pay tribute to early Yukon settlers who were immigrant families from Czechoslovakia.

Frontier life in the 1800s and the old Chisholm Trail are re-enacted the first weekend of June each year during theTaste of Louisiana & Crawfish Festival at the Kirkpatrick Family Farm. Historical re-enactors portray settlers, cattle drovers, buffalo hunters,  Calvary soldiers and other characters who demonstrate what life was like during the early days. Store fronts on the property that replicate early day business establishments provide an authentic backdrop to reliving Oklahoma’s history during the Louisiana Purchase.

The annual Freedom Fest celebration is held every July 4 as the community turns out for a full day of fun and fireworks. Yukon is also known for its annual Christmas in the Park event, featuring three interconnecting city parks lavishly decorated top to bottom with 4 million twinkling lights,  200 unique lighted displays, quaint village houses and other decorations. Motorists drive along a lighted path through the parks to view the displays featuring synchronized music, animation and movement. The event starts each year on the Saturday prior to Thanksgiving and remains open from 6 to 11 p.m. nightly through New Years Eve.  There is no admission charge, but donations that support the event are merrily accepted.

Other events include Festival of the Child each May, Concerts in the Park every Thursday evening from June through August, and two Oklahoma City Philharmonic Concerts each year; on July 4 and the other “Sounds of the Season” concert prior to Christmas.  To obtain a detailed schedule of events and activities, contact the Yukon Parks & Recreation Department at 405-350-8937.
