Parks & Recreation
Yukon’s 46th annual Turtle Race is here! Turtles will start their engines in the parking lot by the North shelter of City Park, next to Mulvey’s Pond. The FREE contest is open to children ages 5 to 11, and they are eligible to enter as many turtles as they can catch or buy(No alligator Snapping Turtles will be accepted). The races kick off at 10:00 am so arrive a little early to get registered.
What does it take to win the slowest race in town? Participants will need to:
- Bring a turtle, no Alligator Snapping Turtles (Caught or Bought)
- Make a costume for their turtle (Optional).
- Register their turtle at the registration tent and get ready to rumble!
The contest offers divisions for small, medium and large turtles. Ribbons are awarded for fastest turtle, slowest turtle, largest turtle, smallest turtle and best costumed turtle from each division! So, bring your turtle and see if it can shell out some defeat on the competition!
Care should be taken in decorating the turtle that whatever the child does, is not permanent or harmful to the turtle. For example, please do not paint the turtles. If you catch a wild turtle, it is important to return the turtle back to the same place you found it following the race.
